Seekonk Woodworking began ten years ago when Phil Gruppuso became a woodworker living and working in Seekonk and settled on a business name that felt simple and conducive to the work. What started as a straightforward approach to making has grown into a practice centered around unique pieces designed for galleries, shops, and individual commissions. Each piece balances function with a distinct point of view, bringing together thoughtful design and the natural qualities of wood.
Every Seekonk Woodworking piece begins with the wood itself: its color, texture, character, and suitability for the work at hand. Phil pays close attention to every detail, allowing imperfections to become part of the story when they are intrinsic to the material. His designs favor simplicity without feeling predictable, often drawing inspiration from mid 20th century visual arts, particularly minimalism and constructivism, while always keeping the intended function at the center.
The work is created in a small 250 square foot shop attached to Phil’s garage, making for a remarkably short commute from home to studio. Organized and relatively clean, the space is where careful craftsmanship meets a practical approach to making, resulting in pieces that feel considered, functional, and distinctive.
