April May Art grew from a lifelong love of creating beautiful, meaningful images and a desire to share that connection with others. What began with a simple belief that she was meant to be an artist has grown into a body of work rooted in New England landscapes, expressive color, and the feeling of a place. Her paintings look beyond a landscape’s physical appearance, capturing the movement, atmosphere, and emotion that make a place memorable.
April works primarily in watercolor and gouache, building landscapes through layered washes and subtle color transitions inspired by plein air painting and her own reference photographs. More recently, she has been exploring gouache on black paper, using the dark surface to bring richness and depth to each piece. Her mosaic paintings follow a more intricate process, with every shape painted individually and separated by thin white lines to create a stained glass effect. The process becomes something of a puzzle, with flowing shapes, layered color, and expressive brushwork bringing abstraction and impressionism together.
Her mosaic skies have become one of the most recognizable parts of April May Art, inspired by what she describes asthe colors of the wind. The shapes move through the sky with a sense of rhythm and energy, expressing something invisible that can still be felt. April creates most of her work in the studio at the back of her home, but on beautiful days, you may find her painting outdoors at the Nathan Lester House in Gales Ferry, Connecticut, a place that continues to inspire her work.
