Playful ceramic tableware and sculptural objects created through curiosity, collaboration, and community.
There’s an unmistakable energy inside Anyhow Studio, one built around experimentation, shared learning, and the belief that creativity flourishes most when people make alongside one another. The ceramics coming out of the studio feel joyful, expressive, and deeply individual, yet tied together by a collective spirit that encourages artists to try new ideas simply because they’re curious enough to begin.
Founder and creative director Liz Welch named the studio after a quote by artist Lisa Congdon: “Begin Anyhow.” At the time, Liz was feeling stuck creatively and wrote the phrase down before taping it above their pottery wheel. The words quickly became more than just motivation, evolving into the foundation of the studio itself. Anyhow Studio welcomes not only beginners, but anyone committed to maintaining a beginner’s mindset, approaching creativity with openness, curiosity, and a willingness to keep growing.
Working primarily with off-white cone 6 stoneware and the studio’s own in-house dip glazes, the artists at Anyhow create one of a kind mugs, vases, planters, sculptures, and playful functional objects full of texture and personality. Techniques across the studio include sgraffito, mishima, wax resist, stamping, stenciling, and slip trailing, with artists constantly exchanging ideas, glaze combinations, and methods across shared tables and kiln shelves.
That collaborative environment has naturally led to evolving mini-trends within the studio community. One summer, everyone became obsessed with making “blates,” a hybrid between bowls and plates. Later came a wave of planters with attached trays. Liz’s current prediction? Berry bowls. The work feels alive in that way, shaped not only by individual artists, but by the creative momentum of the group as a whole.
Located inside a bright and colorful 7,500 square foot space in Providence’s Valley Arts District, Anyhow Studio functions as both a ceramics workspace and gathering place. Members, students, and staff share tools, kilns, ideas, and plenty of time alongside the studio’s two resident dogs, Daisy from HR and Cashew from the Sniffing and Receiving department. Besides membership options to access the supplies, kilns and community of Anyhow, they also provide a wide range of workshops for all experience levels, making Anyhow Studio a space for not just organic creation but also tutelage and education.
