My name is, Josh Yelle ( @pencilmancer ), and I’m a Providence local illustrator, tattoo artist, graphic designer and calligrapher. I’ve been a calligrapher for almost 12 years and if you are interested in creating bold, gothic, Fraktur/Olde English letterings, I will introduce you to the tools & how to hold them and foundational drills to approach a simple blackletter font.
And how, through lots practice, can eventually evolve into more organic and floral approaches like this:
You will receive a double sided calligraphy marker, and a little graph paper booklet to help you keep track of your progress. With these, we will work on the basic muscle memory drills necessary to create your choice of your initials or last name, etc. We will be focusing more on the exercises to help you avoid the pitfalls I’ve endured on my path. Do not worry if you have bad penmanship! Mine is awful too!

****special notice for left-handed people****
I… am right-handed, and the approach for a left-handed gothic calligraphy is wildly different. I’m afraid I won’t be able to show you properly, without just directing you to left-handed calligraphers online to watch them. All of whom are amazing, simply because of how they’re forced to tackle the paper differently.
